WHAT CAUSES HYPOTHYROIDISM? – THE BASIC OVERVIEW
Apples are the cause! Just joking. But there are actually many reasons for why this problem can arise. The obvious problem is that the thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones that are necessary for your metabolism. Most often the problem seems to be with the thyroid gland itself.
In rare instances it has been a problem in the pituitary gland or the brain, because they regulate the thyroid gland. The brain sends signals to the pituitary gland to make a thyroid stimulating hormone. This hormone then signals to the thyroid to produce its hormones. Normally these thyroid hormones will regulate metabolism, body temperature, and heart rate.
These hormones also help to produce proteins and regulate blood calcium levels. Because it does all these various things it can cause various symptoms and throw off many other things
Causes for this can include:
· Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
· treatments for hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
· thyroid tumors
· radiation of the head or neck to treat cancer
· drug interference
· hormonal imbalances that occur during menopause, premenopause, or postpartum.
Causes Outline-
Hormonal Changes in Women: the hormonal changes that are common in women (pregnancy, menstruation, menopause) often have an impact on throwing the thyroid hormones off.
Over 20% of women are diagnosed with hypothyroidism during menopause (and I’m sure there are many women who go undiagnosed, or misdiagnosed). Many menopause symptoms are in fact hypothyroidism.
Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: this is an immune system problem that causes the loss of thyroid cells due because of repeated inflammation from the immune response. Amazingly, this is the most common cause. This damage will lower the amount of thyroid hormones produced.
Radiation Treatments: head and neck radiation can destroy a significant amount of thyroid gland cells. Surgeries to remove thyroid tumors or to prohibit hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone production) would also be a cause.
Medications: Medications like lithium, amiodarone, propylthiouracil and others can actually inhibit the production of your thyroid hormones.
