Is your boss incapable of delegating duties to you without standing over you at every turn? If you answered yes to this, you are not alone. Unfortunately so many bosses today are afraid to relinquish control and let someone else do some of the work. It is even more prevalent if you are working for an individual who started either a home based or small business on his/her own and then it grew too large for them to handle, so they had to start hiring employees. To gain some insight, try to remember that when they started the business they took care of everything such as the accounting, writing letters, answering telephones, filling orders – you get the idea.

How do I have such insight, because before we ran our own business, I worked for many of them in Corporate America.

In many of the companies I worked, in either a secretarial or administrative capacity, I had one of these bosses. It was very disconcerting to have to go to them for every little thing, like changes in a letter, making statements to clients on the telephone, making a supply decision or a catering decision. It just made my job harder and caused more room for mistakes to be made instead of less. Right now I can see the heads bobbing up and down in the affirmative by all of those who have worked for such as boss.

Now at the opposite extreme is the executive that expects you to handle everything without any feedback. This is not good either, as your assistant/secretary/administrator needs to be able to ask you a question on occasion. You can over delegate.

Now some of us are lucky like I was in many of my jobs to get the perfect combination of a boss who lets you do your job and gives feedback at the same time. I can remember fondly one such boss who said to one of his colleagues in my hearing, “Oh, I can leave my office and know my business is in good hands when I am away because Susan and I work so well together. She knows exactly what needs to be done and does it. I don’t have to give her direction, she runs with it and if there is a question or problem she wants my feedback on she asks me when I call in. Now I can see those of you sighing and wishing you had such a boss. I would say you can, if you just talk to yours, but I know and have tried talking to the controlling boss and unfortunately most of the time it gets you nowhere or it works for a while and they go back to their old ways.

So what to do, well the best advise I have is to feel things out during an interview. After working for controllers for a while you can tell them apart from those nice independent bosses and take your jobs based on that. Remember you are not the only one being interviewed, do some interviewing yourself. After all it is your bread and butter here and you will be spending a large part of your day working with them, why give yourself a headache.
